The Baroque Gardens

The Baroque gardens in Cleves are an excellent example of classical garden art and reflect the splendor and aesthetics of the Baroque period. Designed according to the plans of Prince Johann Moritz of Nassau-Siegen in the 17th century, these gardens offer a beautiful combination of architectural precision and natural beauty.

Located against the slope in the south is the so-called “Amphitheater,” a half-circle in the embankment that is terraced like an ancient theater. Surrounded by a densely grown gallery, it serves today as a picturesque backdrop and meeting place. The centerpiece is the statue of Minerva, a gift from the city of Amsterdam to Johann Moritz.

The gardens are famous for their elegant water features and atmospheric water bodies, inviting visitors to linger. Around the water surfaces, numerous seating areas offer ideal spots for rest and relaxation.
